Discovering Slovenia ‘on the run’

Slovenia might be among the smaller countries in the world, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in its diversity. It is the place where the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Karst and the Pannonian Plain meet. This results in outstanding diversity.

This year, Wings for Life World Run presented by I Feel Slovenia will again start in Ljubljana, known as one of the world’s greenest capitals. A picturesque city, whose image has been marked by different periods of history, features a number of remarkable attractions. No. 1 is definitely the majestic Ljubljana Castle, which sits atop the hill and adorns the city. Make sure to catch the glimpse of it from Congress Square where the race starts. While running through the streets of Ljubljana, make sure to admire the beautiful buildings. You will also pass the famous Žale Cemetery, which is one of Plečnik’s works inscribed on the UNESCO List.

You will continue towards Domžale, a city located north of Ljubljana., known for objects made of straw – in the past, its fame extended far beyond Slovenia. Today, Domžale Straw Hat Museum reminds us of this flourishing period. Another charming town you will pass is Kamnik. You will run along Šutna, by many considered the most beautiful street in Slovenia. It is adorned with a characteristic set of medieval houses leaning against each other. You will continue towards Komenda, which is known as the hometown of Tadej Pogačar, one of the world’s best cyclists and a two-time winner of Tour de France. There, you will already be able to catch a glimpse of Krvavec, one of the most popular ski resorts in Slovenia, which turns into a natural adventure park in the summer.

You will continue to Cerklje na Gorenjskem, where Strmol Manor is located. You won’t pass it, but the location is worth revisiting. Drago Jančar, a Slovenian author even wrote a novel “I saw her that night”, that is said to be inspired by a couple who owned Strmol Castle. Impressive, right?

After Cerklje, you will run towards Vodice, pass Smlednik (mind the remarkable ruins of a castle) and return back to Ljubljana.
